About the Speaker

Rev. Richard Woodson "Woody" Markert is the Senior Minister of Plains Presbyterian Church in Zachery, Lousiana, in the greater Baton Rouge area.  This church is the oldest and largest Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) congregation in that state.  During his tenure, fiften young people from the church have entered full-time Christian service.  Currently eight are in the PCA pastoral ministry or in seminary.  None had entered the ministry in the church's previous 165 years of existence.

Woody Markert attended Tulane University, New Orleans.  After working in sales and marketing for thirteen years, he finished his undergraduate studies at Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi.  Upon completion of his Bachelor of Science degree, he enrolled at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS), in Jackson, where he received his Master of Divinity degree.  He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America and has served churches in Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana.

Now serving in his thirtieth year in the pastoral ministry, he has preached at the General Assembly of the PCA and on the mission field.  He has also spoken at biblical, theology, and mission conferences throughout the southeastern states and has contributed articles to various Christian periodicals.  He is presently a member of the Committee on the Review and Control of Presbyteries of the PCA and has served on committees of commissioners and other denominational and presbytery committees.

Woody was converted to the Christian faith in his late twenties, as was his wife, Linda.  It was through a reading of Francis Schaeffer particularly, along with the study of the Scripture, that he came to understand his sin and his need of a Savior and embraced Jesus Christ.

Woody and Linda are the parents of four adult children and have eight grandchildren.
