Transforming Hearts, Conforming to Christ
Philemon & ColossiansThe West Houston and North Houston Bible Studies studied the books of Philemon and Colossians in the Spring of 2010. Links to notes for each lesson are in the table below.
Philemon Theme: "Receive and Restore the Runaway Brother"
"I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains… I am sending him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart… For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, no longer a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me" (Phm. vv. 10, 12, 15-17, NKJV).
Colossians Theme: "The Sufficiency and Supremacy of Christ"
"For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence… For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power" (Col. 1:16-18; 2:9-10, NKJV).
The above notes are excerpted from commentaries listed in the Schedule. They have been organized and edited together into a composite narrative, but they do not represent original material, phraseology, or ideas. I am indebted to the cited authors for their careful exegesis and explanation of the original and English texts of Philemon and Colossians. DSB
