Meet the Elders

 Scott Baker

Scott Baker was raised in suburbs of Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Chicago before moving to Houston with his family when he was 15. Except for 4 years in Nashville at Vanderbilt University, where he studied Chemical Engineering and met and married his wife, Diane, Scott has lived in Houston ever since. Scott manages a global technical support group for a major chemical company, supporting catalyst customers all over the world. Scott became a Christian at an early age and has been studying the Scriptures and serving the Lord ever since.  Scott and Diane have been members at Covenant since 1985.  Scott has served as a Deacon for 9 years and as a Ruling Elder since 1999. Scott enjoys teaching adult Sunday school, particularly books of the Old  Testament. Scott and Diane have two adopted girls, Hannah and Michaela.
 Ted Hess

Ted Hess was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama.  He grew up believing in God, going to parochial school, and regularly attending church, but the truth of the gospel did not truly break through until soon after his graduation from Auburn University in 1979.  Ted moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1981, where he eventually met his wife, Kristen, a native New Yorker.  Married since 1984, they offer themselves as proof that “mixed marriages” can work!  After earning his MBA from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1987, Ted joined a major oil company as a human resources advisor, with assignments in Tulsa, Chicago, Houston, Norway, and Houston (again).  Ted and Kristen joined Covenant in 1992, shortly after their initial move to Houston.  A Ruling Elder since 1999, he has taught children, teen, and adult Sunday school classes, and has served on two pastoral search committees.  Ted and Kristen are the parents of three children – Caitlin, Peter, and Laura. They have two grandchildren.
  Blaine Locheed

Blaine was born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1973 and lived in both Oklahoma and Illinois before moving back to Texas in 2000. He went to school at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana where he obtained a degree in Sociology. Later he earned a Master's in Educational Technology Leadership from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He currently works as an Associate Band Director at Cypress Springs High School. His wife Kathryn is from New England and went to college in New York. Blaine and  Kate have been attending Covenant since moving to Houston in 2008. He became a ruling elder in 2014 and is excited to serve the church, using the gifts God has given him. They have two children - James and Gwen.
 Wayne Slaikeu

Wayne is that rare individual – a native Houstonian! Apart from two years of active duty in the US Navy, Wayne has spent most of his life here, including attending the University of Houston.  At one time, Wayne worked for the company founded by Elder Stuck and Chris Willis; he is now retired.  Wayne cannot remember a time during his life in which he was not trusting in Jesus as his personal Savior. He thanks his Christian parents and the members of Oaklawn PCA for teaching him the faith and nurturing him in the Lord. Early in life he made it his goal to live a life of obedience and faith in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Wayne was baptized at Oaklawn and was a member and deacon there for many years before being one of the original founding members of Covenant in 1974. He was a Deacon at Covenant from its founding until he was elected as a Ruling Elder in 1999. Wayne has taught adult Sunday school and has been the coordinator of our tape/CD ministry for many years. However, Wayne considers his most important spiritual service to be prayer – praying for the spiritual growth of the Church and encouraging others to deepen their prayer lives both in private prayer and at corporate gatherings such as Prayer Meetings and small group Bible Studies.
Bill Stuck

Bill Stuck was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. He came to Covenant Presbyterian Church in 1979 and was elected deacon in 1982 and then elder in 1986. He served as Clerk of Session from1995-2014*.  Bill has taught a variety of adult education classes in Sunday school. Bill has a wife, Sue, a daughter, Shelley, who grew up in the church, a son-in-law, John, and three beautiful grandchildren, Callie, Cole, and Claire who also attend Covenant. Bill is co-owner with Chris Willis of a screen print company, which specializes in helmet decals. God has used the people and ministry of Covenant to bless Bill and his family with spiritual growth since 1979 and it is his wish that others will find the joy of knowing the Lord better as they worship together with his family at Covenant.
*After many years of faithful service on the Session, Bill retired from the office of elder in 2014 to spend more time with his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, as well as run his business. Although he is no longer an elder, Bill continues to serve the church in many ways.
 Jeremy Thomas

Jeremy is another native Houstonian! In growing up in the "Bible-belt", he was born into an environment where Christianity was assumed but not proclaimed nor practiced. According to Jeremy, this led to a hedonistic, self-righteous lifestyle. In the midst of his rebellion against God, Jeremy had a curiosity about the meaning of life. While searching for truth, he was invited to a non-denominational church by his brother, who had just converted. Jeremy, however, became more confused. He devoted himself to reading and studying the Bible and after reading the Gospels, was converted at the age of 20. Five years later the Holy Spirit led him into self-study of Reformed Theology, which led him to find Covenant, a sound Reformed, Presbyterian church. Jeremy has a very deep love for the church as a whole and seeks to emphasize true piety with service to Christ.  He has taught both high school and adult Sunday school classes. He was ordained as a ruling elder at Covenant in 2016.  He is currently an assistant manager at a major retail shoe store.

 Ben West

Ben was born in Kentucky but grew up mainly in Union City, Tennessee. He attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where he obtained a degree in history, with a minor in religion, in 2005. Upon graduation from Transylvania, he enrolled in Vanderbilt Divinity School, where he completed a Masters of Divinity degree. Finding great delight in serving Christ and His people, Ben was originally ordained in 2008 in the Disciples of Christ denomination, serving both as the pastor of a church in Alabama, and later as a chaplain fellow at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The Holy Spirit opened Ben's eyes to the deeper mysteries of Christ's sovereign grace during his years in ministry. Therefore, in 2012 Ben left this denomination and became Presbyterian. He obtained a preaching license from the Houston Metro. Presbytery in 2014 and is currently pursuing ordination as a teaching elder in the PCA. He was ordained as a ruling elder at Covenant in 2016. Currently, he works full-time as an estimator in the erosion control industry.
