Meals for Evacuees

Meals for Evacuees

at Covenant Presbyterian Church

September 5, 7, 9

Covenant provided meals for evacuees of Hurricane Katrina at the church building on the evenings of September 5, 7, 9 (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) from 6:15 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Sunday, September 4:  After Sunday morning worship, we fed lasagna to about 200 people, including an extended group of related families.  Check here for more information on how to meet the longer term needs of this group.

Monday, September 5:  On Labor day, we had a hot dog cook-out.  We served food to approximately 100 people at the church or via delivery to the Texas Department of Health & Human Services office on Old Westheimer, just across Westheimer from the church.  We also distributed water and drinks to those waiting in line there.

Wednesday, September 7: We continue to feed folks evacuated from Hurricane Katrina, but the number of folks is declining.  About 70 folks were served a spaghetti dinner.  Due to the declining need at this time,  Friday, September 9 will be our final meal for evacuees.  If you are interested in ongoing support to evacuees from Katrina, we are helping a group of related families (approximately 40 individuals) with specific needs.  Check here for more information.

Friday, September 9: We fed about 30 people on Friday night.  The lines at the Texas Department of Health & Human Services have dwindled.  This was our last evening meal at this time.

Thanks to Mary Coulter, Anna Lindauer, and Shelley Johnston for Sunday's dinner; Stephen Wick who was the chief cook on Monday; Kim Kelly, the chief cook Wednesday night; and Bonnie Hood, the chief cook on Friday night.  Special thanks to Betty Jean Larson who planned the menus and coordinated the resources for the evening meals.  Many members and friends showed up to help serve, visit with our guests, and clean up.  It was a great opportunity and we thank everyone for their contributions.
